JOSH continued to struggle with his conscience the following day. He knew that the right thing was to remove the cameras and level with his wife. They needed to start planning together what would get Miguel out of their lives, and they needed to take a hard look at their marriage and what had gone wrong between them. However, deprived of his home-brew surveillance system, he was much less confident that he’d find something they could use against Miguel. Otherwise it seemed like their only way out was to sneak away and hope that Miguel didn’t find them, and that seemed like a dangerous gamble. Miguel wasn’t the sort of guy to go away quietly.

Josh needed Miguel to unequivocally, unmistakably violate his parole on video, and he needed to pay close enough attention to the feeds to make sure that Emily wasn’t in any danger as a consequence. For the time being, he saw no other option but to keep the cameras in place.

He did some research on the internet, and found that terms of parole generally required a person to remain drug-free and not in possession of a firearm. That provided two things for him to look for, and it seemed pretty likely that Miguel had a gun hidden somewhere. Other than those two potential violations, his parole depended on the terms of his release. Josh knew that he could probably track the parole officer down if he really worked at it, but he wasn’t ready to talk to the authorities yet. All Miguel was guilty of so far was sleeping with another man’s wife. That might make him a bad person, but it wasn’t a crime.

As much as Josh wondered how Emily was doing, he resisted the urge to flip on the cameras in their apartment. He could see from the other feed that Miguel was still in his apartment, and so for the time being Emily was safe. He paid as little attention to his work as he could get away with. His top priority was finding dirt on Miguel.

The man certainly seemed to live a boring life. He spent most of the day watching television, splayed out on his bed shirtless and in bare feet, flipping from channel to channel. Every now and then he would take out his flip phone and type out a text. Josh almost wished that he could snoop on Miguel’s phone the way he had with Emily’s, except that action was more illegal than he could stomach. The idea was to send Miguel back to prison, not end up there himself.

He was scanning court records online, trying to figure out what Miguel had been in prison for, when motion on the video screen drew his eye. Miguel walked to his door. When he opened it, Emily walked in.

“Shit,” Josh cursed, and cursed again more loudly when Miguel closed the door behind her. He fumbled with his laptop, booting up the iPhone spyware as quickly as possible. Finally he managed to turn the microphone on.
